Frequently asked questions

What are some important things parents should understand about ski jumping?

Welcome to the sport of ski jumping! If you are new to the sport, there is a lot to learn! Let's first mention the parts of the ski jump! The inrun is the part they go down before jumping. If this is made out of wood or metal it is called a scaffold. When they go down this part they also get into an "inrun" position in which their body is lowered to gain speed. At the end of the jump is the take-off. That is the part where they jump. It takes lots of practice to jump at the right time. Below the jump is the landing hill. If you jump further down the landing hill toward the K point, you get more points. In a tournament, you get two jumps that count toward your score. You get points for distance and points for style. More on that later!

What are some exciting or unique aspects of ski jumping?

Ski jumping is a sport where kids progress as they are ready. They also must have a coach's permission to advance to the next jump. The goal is some amount of mastery on one hill before they advance up. Going off a jump is brave. Make sure to give them a high five after and yell really loud!

What are common concerns parents have?

Many parents worry about injuries. Injuries can happen in any sport but in ski jumping, everyone works very hard to have the hills groomed well so that they are safe for the skiers. Equipment has come a long way over the years and today's equipment really helps to keep kids safer. And I already mentioned that the kids don't move up until they are ready.
